Title:From work to rest: the relationship between work demands, cyber leisure time, psychological detachment and subjective sleep quality
Abstract:Workloads are part and parcel of everyday life and deplete our energy reserves, so it's important how we rest after work, both in our free time and during sleep, to regain energy and maintain our health. This Master's thesis examines the relationships between emotional work demands, cyber leisure, psychological detachment from work and subjective sleep quality. The aim was to examine how emotional work demands predict sleep quality and whether cyber leisure and psychological detachment from work mediate the relationship between them. In this study 45 employees participated in completing daily questionnaires three times a day for six consecutive days. We performed multilevel modelling and examined the relationships between the variables at the daily level, allowing us to test more complex relationships between them. The results showed that emotional work demands negatively predicted sleep quality. We did not find a statistically significant effect between emotional work demands and cyber leisure, between cyber leisure and psychological detachment from work, and between psychological detachment and sleep quality. Similarly, when controlling for sequential mediation through cyber leisure and psychological detachment, we did not find a statistically significant association. This study provides further understanding of the relationship between emotional work demands and sleep quality. It also highlights the need for further research to better understand this relationship and the possible mediators between them.
