Title:Link between excessive internet use and loneliness
Abstract:The internet has become an essential tool that has significantly changed the way people communicate and spend their leisure over the past decades. The number of face-to-face interactions has decreased, leading to greater isolation and, consequently, feelings of loneliness. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the relationship between excessive internet use and feelings of loneliness in Slovenia and to determine how demographic factors influence a persons’ internet use. In the theoretical part, we defined key concepts and presented findings from previous studies, while the empirical part focused on conducting research among the Slovenian population. The collected data was statistically analysed using the SPSS program. The results of the study showed a weak reciprocal relationship between excessive internet use and feelings of loneliness. People who use the internet more frequently tend to experience certain feelings of loneliness slightly more often, and vice versa. Additionally, the findings indicate that age, marital status, and employment status influence the amount of time spent using the internet, but gender and level of education do not. The study confirms that excessive internet use affects an individual’s social life and mental well-being. Although the results do not show a strong connection between excessive internet use and loneliness, they suggest the need for further research in this area, particularly with regard to preventative measures.
