Title:Balancing family and career: a comparison between women of the "baby boomer" and "y" generations
Abstract:The role of women in society has changed significantly over time, both in the labour market and in family life. While Baby Boomers often put family before career, generation Y women have more often faced challenges in balancing the two. The aim of the master thesis was to examine how women's values changed in the two generations, what influence career ambitions had on the decision to become a mother, and to what extent women were present in leadership positions. We paid particular attention to the fact that women delay family planning because of their career ambitions. Our own research found that, on average, Baby Boomers decided to become mothers between the ages of 24 and 28, while generation Y women decided to become mothers for the first time later, between the ages of 29 and 33. Both generations highlighted financial stability, housing situation and personal desire for motherhood as key factors in family planning, with »Baby Boomers« placing more importance on lower living costs and easier access to property. The importance of the family has been maintained in both generations, but generation Y women have placed more emphasis on the equal sharing of family responsibilities between partners. Millennial women also value more flexible working conditions, which make it easier for them to balance work and family life.
