Title:The role of Parents in Developing Attitudes towards Media in Early Adolescence
Abstract:Digital media have become an indispensable part of modern life, offering vast opportunities for connection and creativity, while also presenting challenges and negative impacts. Despite certain restrictions, adolescents aged 11 to 13 are frequent users of social networks. Parental influence remains crucial during the transition from childhood to adolescence. This study aimed to examine the role parents play in their children's use of the internet and social media. The research included 100 randomly selected parents of children aged 11 to 13. We found that active mediation is the most common parental mediation strategy and that digitally active parents more frequently involve their children in their online presence. Based on the results, we conclude that parents recognize the negative effects of internet use to a limited extent or do not attribute significant importance to them. Furthermore, age and education levels of parents do not have a statistically significant impact on their decisions regarding their children's use of digital technology. The findings are significant for practice, highlighting the need for additional parental education on critical use of technology and how establishing healthy digital habits can contribute to a child's safe and responsible relationship with the internet. We emphasize that parents, through their example, communication, and consistent boundary-setting, lay the foundation for the positive influence of digital media on their child’s development.
