Title:Perception of aging older adults in Slovenia: a qualitative study
Abstract:Introduction: Aging is an individual process that each individual experiences in a different way. Perceptions of age usually come from one's own experiences. People can develop a negative attitude towards aging and old age because they see old age as an obstacle to achieving their goals. Methods: We conducted a qualitative research in which 7 people over 65 years of age participated. We collected data using a semi-structured interview. The collected data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Based on the analysis of the interviews, we identified the main category Experiences and Feelings in Aging, which consists of 6 categories and 25 subcategories. The results showed that older people accept aging as a natural part of life and that they see both positive and negative aspects in old age. Some people come to terms with aging and accept it. While others are afraid of losing power or independence. Discussion and conclusion: Perceptions of ageing among older people vary widely, often depending on an individual's experience, health, social environment and cultural factors. The perception of their age is related to their health and well-being. In general, it has been shown that those older people who are healthier and more socially active perceive aging positively, while those with health problems and lack of social contact are more susceptible to negative feelings.
