Abstract:Indonezija, država tisočerih otokov, magičnih peščenih plaž in neskončnega morja, skriva temno problematiko nezakonitega izkopavanja zlata.

Title:Illegal gold mining in Indonesia
Abstract:Indonesia, a country of a thousand islands, magical sandy beaches and endless sea, hides a dark problem of illegal gold mining. It is one of the largest producers of gold, boasting rich deposits of this precious metallic element. A large part of the population faces the consequences of this industry on a daily basis, putting family members and friends at risk by choosing to work without the necessary permits and working in illegal small-scale artisanal mining. Toxic mercury is used in the work, causing serious health problems for workers, people living nearby and unborn children. This leads to serious environmental consequences such as water pollution, the accumulation of mercury in crops and the destruction of various ecosystems. Observing the problem with one's own eyes, observing children with various health problems, listening to various stories from local people, one realises that the problem is bigger than it first appears. Tourists are often unaware of what is happening, and one doubts that the residents and workers who are endangering their own health are aware of the consequences. As the problem seems to be little known, an analysis of the existing literature was carried out and it was found that the issue is being talked about but not heard or known by key stakeholders. A start needs to be made in the right direction, which includes improving working conditions, using less toxic methods and starting to raise awareness among the population.
