Abstract:Namen zaključnega dela je preučiti razumevanje otrok o fosilih pred aktivnostjo in po njej, kjer bodo raziskovali modelne in prave fosile.

Title:Discovering past life with the use of fossils in kindergarden
Abstract:The purpose of the final thesis is to examine children's understanding of fossils before and after an activity in which they explore both model and real fossils. In a kindergarten group of 23 children aged 4 to 5 years, we carried out a week-long series of activities on the topics of dinosaurs and fossils. Before and after the implementation of the activities, we asked the children seven questions related to dinosaurs, fossils, and palaeontologists, and compared their responses. After analysing the results, we observed significant changes and found that the children had acquired a great deal of new knowledge—for example, what fossils are, that they provide insights into the past, that dinosaurs once existed, and that a palaeontologist is a person who studies fossils. The children were actively involved throughout the activities, independently solving the prepared challenges. The activities were concrete and hands-on, such as identifying and searching for fossils in the forest, assembling a dinosaur skeleton, creating and recognising imprints in flour, and more. Even weeks after the activities, the children continued to talk about the topic and the environments they had explored. Our study's findings support the importance of designing activities based on children's interests and creating learning experiences that place the child and their active role at the centre of the educational process.
