Title:Sports Activity and Stress in Slovenian Police Officers
Abstract:Stress is a natural response to events that we perceive as threatening. It can motivate us to achieve goals, but it can also negatively affect our health if not properly managed. Police work is one of the most stressful professions due to exposure to various traumatic situations. Previous research has shown that physical activity helps reduce sensitivity to stress and enables more effective stress management. In this master's thesis, we studied the impact of physical activity on stress management among Slovenian police officers. We found that they engage in sports more frequently than recommended by the World Health Organization. The most important stress factors they perceive include organizational climate and fairness in relationships, institutional control and responsibility pressures, operational and health-related work stress, and systemic and work-related pressures, with the latter being perceived as the strongest stressors. Female police officers report higher operational and health-related stress than their male counterparts. The majority of respondents (95%) are regularly physically active. The study showed that the type of physical activity and the time dedicated to it are not related to stress perception. Most respondents believe that their employer does not provide enough time for physical activity during work hours and suggest introducing an hour of physical activity at the beginning or end of the workday to maintain physical and mental readiness.
