Title:School shootings through the eyes of young people: how high school students experience the threat of a shooting attack : diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa Varstvoslovje
Abstract:Over the past ten years, there has been an increase in school shooting attacks, not only in the United States but also in Europe. As a result, news of these attacks is spreading to Slovenia, and the media is reporting on them in an increasingly sensationalist manner, which is heightening the sense of insecurity among young people. Schools must provide students with a safe learning environment, which is why it is so important that young people feel safe at school. The literature indicates that there is no single profile of perpetrators of such attacks, but that biological and sociological factors, the society in which they live and the perpetrator's mental health have a significant influence. Most research focuses on the event itself and the perpetrator, while the victims, the students, are pushed aside. Little emphasis is placed on how young people perceive the threat of a shooting attack. By reviewing the literature, interviewing the headmaster and conducting a survey of fourth-year secondary school and grammar school students, we gained insight into how students perceive the threat of a shooting attack and what protocols and security systems the school has in place. The results showed that greater media exposure does not have a direct impact on an increased sense of insecurity among students. Female students tend to perceive the threat more seriously than male students, while the majority of respondents believe that the likelihood of an attack has increased in the last five years. In addition, it was found that students are not familiar with safety protocols, indicating that there is a communication gap at school. The interview further emphasised the importance of safety drills in the event of an attack.
