Title:Business process re-engineering in the transition from printed media to digital
Abstract:The thesis explores the redesign of the business process within the editorial department of a media organisation that is discontinuing its print edition and fully transitioning to a digital publishing model. Although a digital content submission system and distribution channel were already in place, the analysis revealed that the editorial workflow was not adequately adapted to the demands of modern digital publishing. Key shortcomings included a lack of integration between process phases, unstructured and decentralised communication, reliance on informal coordination for support activities such as photography, design, and infographics, and limited options for real-time collaboration among authors, editors, and other contributors. These issues led to production delays, reduced transparency, and lower operational reliability. To address these challenges, the thesis proposes a redesigned editorial workflow based on a centralised, digitally supported editorial platform. This platform enables clear task allocation, automated coordination of editorial and support activities, and unified, real-time communication. The new process also includes automated content distribution across multiple digital channels, supporting continuous and agile publishing. A comparison between the existing and redesigned processes demonstrates improvements in workflow clarity, task execution speed, operational stability, and collaborative efficiency. The proposed model represents a significant advancement towards a modern digital editorial environment, characterised by fluidity, responsiveness, and high-level coordination.
