Title:Extraction of β-carotene and fucoxanthin from sea algae
Abstract:The thesis focuses on the optimisation of supercritical extraction of β-carotene and fucoxanthin from algae by pretreating them with the ionic liquid choline lysinate. Both β-carotene and fucoxanthin are important carotenoids with great potential in the pharmaceutical and food industries. The parameters on the basis of which the experimental design was prepared were pressure and temperature, and their variation was used to optimise the fucoxanthin and β-carotene content in the extracts. Compared to other methods, the content in the extracts was higher using supercritical extraction. The optimum conditions for this method were 350 bar and 50 °C, where the fucoxanthin content was 31,34 mg Fx/g extract and the β-carotene content was <1 mg Bc/g extract. In all other extracts, β-carotene was not detected above the detection limit. The results obtained were then compared with other studies, which concluded that pre-treatment with the ionic liquid choline lysinate contributes minimally to the effect on the amount of fucoxanthin or β-carotene extracted. They also showed us that supercritical extraction with ionic liquid pre-treatment is more efficient than hot maceration and Soxhlet extraction.
