Title:Quality of life in patients after treatment with extra corporal membrane oxigenation
Abstract:Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oksigenation (ECMO) is a technologically advanced and invasive procedure designed to treat life-threatened patients. Methods: In the theoretical part, we used a descriptive method of work, with a literature review. In the empirical part, we collected and analysed data related to the quality of life of patients after treatment with veno-venous (VV) ECMO in the intensive care unit (ICU). We used the Health Questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L), the Hospital Assessment of Depression and Anxiety Scale (HADS) and the Impact of Event Scale (IES-R) as research instruments. Results: After treatment with VV ECMO, the quality of life of patients after hospital discharge is comparable to that of the general population. Anxiety and depression are present, but the proportion of both decreases proportionally with time after treatment. The analysis shows that less than half of the patients are likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder. Discussion: Most research focuses on short to medium-term follow-up of patients' quality of life after treatment with VV ECMO. Our study included patients over a longer period of time, so a direct comparison is not possible. We compared the results numerically and found that there was no statistically significant difference between patients treated in Slovenia and abroad. Conclusion: One of the main findings of our study shows that survival to hospital discharge is a strong indicator of survival over time.
