Title:The influence of fan culture on the use of pyrotechnics at football matches
Abstract:Organized supporter groups and the fan culture surrounding them are one of the key factors both at football events and beyond the stadiums. They play a crucial role in improving the atmosphere, motivating the team, and also serve as an important symbol in cities. Supporter groups often use pyrotechnics during their cheering, which can cause a risk to their safety and the safety of others. This thesis explores the connection between fan culture and the use of pyrotechnics at football matches in Slovenia and Serbia. It focuses on the use of pyrotechnics among the supporter groups Green Dragons from Slovenia and Delije from Serbia. Central questions are raised regarding how supporter groups, through their values and sense of belonging, influence the use of pyrotechnics in stadiums. At the beginning, the relevant authorities and legislation in both countries are presented. This is followed by an introduction of both supporter groups. In the empirical part of the research, interviews with two players from Football Club Olimpija are presented, along with descriptions of matches attended from observation. The research found that pyrotechnics are very frequently used at football competitions in both countries. Their use is a consequence of expressing identity, belonging, passion, and spectacle, but it also causes conflicts and power struggles among supporters. The use of pyrotechnics also raises numerous safety concerns. The thesis concludes with proposals for finding a balance between supporter freedom and safety.
