Title:The impact of geopolitical tensions on international trade and investments: The case of ship attacks in the Red Sea
Abstract:In the past decade, geopolitical tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran have significantly escalated, which has had a direct impact on the security of maritime transport in the Red Sea. This region, through which a large share of global trade passes, is increasingly affected by attacks on cargo vessels, reflecting serious consequences for the uninterrupted flow of goods, international trade, global investment, and the stability of energy and supply chains. Due to its strategic position connecting major global markets, the Red Sea plays a crucial role, meaning that these disruptions influence global commodity prices, increase logistics costs, and place additional pressure on already vulnerable supply networks. This thesis focuses on analyzing specific incidents and evaluating their effects on key economic indicators, such as oil price fluctuations, investment flows, and changes in the Baltic Dry Index. The findings show that such events not only lead to temporary disruptions in maritime routes but also have long-term effects on investor confidence and regional stability. Security threats in the Red Sea are also triggering broader responses in both investment and energy environments, leading to efforts to find more sustainable solutions for safeguarding maritime routes, encouraging the restructuring of supply chains, and highlighting the need for greater adaptability of the global economy in times of geopolitical uncertainty.
