Title:Comorbidity of schizophrenia and addiction in adults
Abstract:Introduction: Mental health is very important today, as mental disorders that significantly affect our daily lives are becoming increasingly common. Mental disorders include schizophrenia and opioid dependence, which are often comorbid and can have a major impact on patients. The aim of this thesis was to investigate how the prevalence of schizophrenia in adults is related to the comorbidity of opioid dependence. Methods: A literature review was conducted in the PubMed, CINAHL Ultimate and Web of Science databases using the keywords: schizophrenia, opioid addiction, comorbidity and adults, covering the period from 2015 to 2025. A narrative analysis of the sources included in the literature review was performed. Results: Of the 138 studies, seven were included in the final analysis. It has been found that comorbidity is very common and is associated with various factors, among which demographic factors such as gender and age stand out. Discussion and conclusion: Comorbidity between schizophrenia and opioid dependence is present in adults, but a review of the literature found no evidence that opioid addiction is associated with or influences the development of schizophrenia, or vice versa. For further exploration of this area of causal links between opioid dependence and schizophrenia, more in-depth methods and strategies for reviewing the literature are recommended.
