Title:An analysis of the tactical approaches of both teams in the Liverpool vs Manchester City match
Abstract:The thesis focuses on an in-depth tactical and technical analysis of the football match that was played on March 10, 2024 at the Anfield stadium between the teams Liverpool FC and Manchester City FC. The author chose one of the highest quality and attractive football matches of modern times as the subject of research, which reflects the top level of play and strategy. The theoretical part of the thesis presents key concepts of the game of football, such as the modern game model, attack and defense phases, player technique and tactics, and the role of coaches. Special attention is paid to the coaches of both teams – Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola – who are considered exceptional strategists and innovators in world football. In addition to the basics of technical-tactical preparation, elements of sports analytics are also presented, especially the expected goals (xG) statistic, which is increasingly at the forefront in modern football. The empirical part is based on a detailed video analysis of the match, where numerous variables were analyzed, such as the way of defending, the formation of the defensive line, transitions between phases of the game, pace, passing success, lost balls, number of shots on goal and others. Based on this data, the author created technical-tactical game models for both teams and compared them. The results show that the teams used different approaches in the defense and attack phases, with some common characteristics, such as combined defense and high defensive line formation. In this, Liverpool proved to be slightly more active in terms of possession and number of corners, while Manchester City paid more attention to central attacking. Statistical analysis of the hypotheses showed that some assumptions (e.g. more passes by the City team) are valid, while others (e.g. the influence of xG on the result) were not confirmed. The purpose of the task was to show how, with the help of modern analysis methods, an in-depth insight into the course of the game and the teams' tactical decisions can be obtained. The work contributes to a better understanding of the role of analytics in sports and enables more structured preparation of coaches and teams for matches.
