Abstract:Solata (Lactuca sativa L.) sodi med gospodarsko pomembnejše zelenjadnice, njeno pridelavo ogrožajo številni rastlinojedi škodljivci, med katerimi so tudi polži.

Title:Significance of photosynthetic pigments and antioxidants in lettuce defense against slugs
Abstract:Abstract Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most economically important vegetable crops, and its cultivation is threatened by numerous herbivorous pests, including slugs. The aim of this master's thesis was to investigate the response of the lettuce antioxidant system to oxidative stress caused by the attack of two different slug species. The ascorbate–glutathione cycle and the xanthophyll cycle are key antioxidant mechanisms in plants, and changes in the levels of their components (ascorbate, glutathione, and photosynthetic pigments) can serve as indicators of oxidative stress. In this experiment, lettuce plants were grown under controlled greenhouse conditions and separately exposed to two slug species: the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatum) and the Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris). Changes in the contents of ascorbate, glutathione, and photosynthetic pigments were measured and compared to an untreated control group. Slug attacks caused statistically significant changes in antioxidant levels. The Spanish slug induced an increase in glutathione and ascorbate contents in leaves and a decrease in their levels in roots, whereas the grey field slug caused a decrease in both antioxidants in leaves and roots. Alterations were also observed in photosynthetic pigments: total carotenoids, antheraxanthin, and zeaxanthin levels increased, while total chlorophylls and violaxanthin levels decreased. These results indicate that slug attacks activate antioxidant defence mechanisms, contributing to a better understanding of systemic defence adaptations in plants under herbivore pressure.
