Abstract:V magistrski nalogi obravnavamo vprašanje univerzalnosti Ojdipovega kompleksa skozi analizo dveh antropološko – psihoanalitičnih del: Sex and Repression in Savage Society Bronisława Malinowskega ter Oedipus in the Trobriands Melforda E. Spiroja.

Title:Understanding the Oedipus complex according to Malinowski and Spiro's critique
Abstract:In this master's thesis, we discuss the universality of the Oedipus complex through an analysis of two anthropological-psychoanalytical works: Sex and Repression in Savage Society by Bronisław Malinowski and Oedipus in the Trobriands by Melford E. Spiro. The main research questions of the thesis relate to differences in understanding Trobriand family dynamics, the question of authority and sexual dynamics in Trobriand society, and their implications for the theory of the Oedipus complex. In the first part of the thesis, we show that Malinowski, based on his ethnographic observations in Trobriand matrilineal society, rejects the universality of Freud's model of the Oedipus complex. In the second part of the thesis, we present an analysis of Spiro's understanding of the Oedipus complex, which, through a reinterpretation of available ethnographic data, argues that the Oedipus complex is present among the Trobriand Islanders and is even unusually strong. The third part of the thesis compares the arguments of both authors and shows how Malinowski focuses primarily on the aspect of authority in his analysis, while Spiro analyses the internal dynamics of object choice and unconscious desires. The thesis is updated with a reference to pathological narcissism, which can be understood as a consequence of the absence of a traditional resolution of the Oedipus complex.
