Title:Communicating with victims of domestic violence
Abstract:The text addresses the problem of domestic violence in Slovenia and elsewhere in the world, including the multiple victimisation of victims - first by the perpetrator, and then by the lack of institutional support. Police, health professionals and other professional services often lack the knowledge to identify and address violence appropriately, while lengthy legal proceedings and sensationalist media coverage can further deepen the difficult situation of victims. The text also highlighhts the secondary victimisation of victims - first by the perpetrator, and then by the lack of support from institutions. Volunteers, who play an important role in providing assistance, often lack systematic training, which affects the quality of support. The aim of this research is to highlight the importance of adequate training for volunteers and staff in crisis centres and to explore communication approaches in first contact with victims, as inadequate communication can lead to secondary victimisation. The research also addresses the role of digital communication, which is increasing but does not necessarily bring a sense of safety and being heard. The key objectives are to analyse the perceived communication competences of staff and volunteers, to make suggestions for improving training and to adapt approaches to different forms of domestic violence. The need for closer cooperation between institutions, a reduction in tolerance of violence and the development of guidelines that will contribute to greater confidence of victims and more effective protection against violence are highlighted.
