Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava strah pred kriminaliteto v Občini Kočevje kot večdimenzionalen družbeno-psihološki pojav. Ta vključuje biološke, psihološke, socialnopsihološke, demografske in okolijske dejavnike.

Title:Fear of crime in the Municipality of Kočevje
Abstract:This thesis examines fear of crime in the Municipality of Kočevje as a multidimensional socio-psychological phenomenon. It includes biological, psychological, socio-psychological, demographic and environmental factors. The theoretical part defines the concepts of fear and fear of crime and describes the influence of direct and indirect victimisation. The importance of social networks, social capital, cohesion, and the impact of perceived neighbourhood order are discussed. Special attention is given to the role of the media in shaping safety perceptions and reinforcing stereotypes, particularly regarding the Roma community. The empirical part is based on an online survey of 325 residents of Municipality of Kočevje. Six hypotheses were tested, addressing fear levels, gender, age, victimisation, media exposure and fear of Roma. The results show that most respondents express moderate to high levels of fear. Women are significantly more fearful than, while age is not a relevant factor in the sample. A link between personal victimisation and higher fear levels was confirmed. Media exposure was not statistically significant in the sample. The analysis confirms a high level of fear towards Roma and shows that this is a complex phenomenon extending beyond actual crime rates. The conclusion highlights the need for comprehensive preventive measures, stronger institutional trust, active community involvement and balanced media reporting. These elements are essential to reduce fear, improve the sense of safety and strengthen social cohesion in the local environment.
