Title:Filip Jakob Repež and older Slovene official literacy
Abstract:Filip Jakob Repež (1706–1773), who served as an organist in the parish of Lož (now Stari trg pri Ložu), is a significant figure in Slovenian cultural and literary history. He is recognized as the author of printed Slovenian songbooks and devotional texts. An analysis encompassing content, orthography, and palaeography of the relatively overlooked Slovenian records from Loška dolina, dating from the second and third quarters of the 18th century, reveals Repež’s notable contribution to Slovenian official literacy. Contrary to prior beliefs that he solely authored Slovene instructions for the organists of the parish of Lož, Repež was also responsible for composing the only annual account in Slovene of a town magistrate and the documents of the shoemakers’ and leatherworkers’ guilds of Lož. This investigation also contextualizes his Slovene clerkship within the broader utilization of written Slovene in the Cerknica area. This context allows for the conditional identification of a tradition and continuity of written Slovene use from the late 17th century onwards.
Keywords:Slovenian official literacy, Filip Jakob Repež, Lož, Loška valley, instructions for organists, account of the town magistrate, guild book, Slovenian language, official literacy, 18th cent.
