Abstract:Arhitektura predstavlja pomemben, a dostikrat spregledan vidik zaporskega sistema, ki lahko bistveno prispeva k bolj humanim, varnim in učinkovitim oblikam prestajanja kazni. Preučeni so bili zgodovinski modeli zaporov (npr. model panoptikona, auburnski model, pensilvanski model) in sodobnejše oblike (npr. odprti model).

Title:Impact of prison architecture on prisoners' behaviour
Abstract:Architecture is an important, yet often overlooked, aspect of the prison system, which can significantly contribute to more humane, safe, and effective forms of serving sentences. Jails are very different from one another. Differences are especially noticeable between prisons built in different historical periods. Architectural designs of prisons have been recognised as one of the more important factors that influence not only security and control, but also the daily experience of an individual in the penal system. Architecture not only serves as a functional framework for carrying out punishment, but also as an important factor that influences the psychological and behavioural dynamics of the prison. Using a descriptive approach, a relevant literature analysis was conducted in the fields of architecture, psychology, sociology, and criminology. Historical prison models (e.g., the Panopticon model, the Auburn model, the Pennsylvanian model) and more modern forms (e.g., the open model) were studied. We found that spatial elements, such as access to natural light (or artificial light similar to natural light), cell size, the openness of the prison itself, connection to the outside environment, and overcrowding, affect the mental health of prisoners, their behaviour, and the success of their reintegration into society. Proper architectural arrangement contributes to reducing tension, aggression, and stress among prisoners. Additionally, it strengthens the relationship between inmates and staff and supports the goals of resocialization.
