Abstract:Evropska zakonodaja, zlasti Uredba (EU) št. 1169/2011, določa jasna pravila o označevanju živil, vendar med potrošniki še vedno obstajajo razlike v poznavanju in razumevanju teh informacij.

Title:Knowledge and Understanding Level of Food Labels on Prepacked Products among Students and Staff at the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Abstract:European Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 establishes clear guidelines for food labelling, aiming to provide consumers with accurate, transparent, and comprehensible information. Despite these efforts, differences in consumer understanding persist—particularly regarding the interpretation of both mandatory and voluntary labelling elements, such as quality schemes, nutritional values, and health claims. In 2025, a survey was conducted among 113 students and employees at the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences to assess their knowledge of food labels on pre-packaged products. The most recognized and selected quality scheme was “Selected Quality – Slovenia” (52.2% recognition, 46.0% selection), while the label “Produced without GMOs” was the most clearly understood. A high percentage of respondents (99.1%) correctly identified the name of the food and the list of ingredients as mandatory labelling elements. Additionally, over 80% understood the meaning of both the minimum durability date and the use-by date. Gender-based differences were observed: women more frequently recognized and considered labels such as “Produced without GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms),” “Selected Quality – Slovenia,” and the national geographical indication mark, while men more often identified the national organic label. Employees demonstrated better knowledge of non-mandatory elements, such as brand names, daily intake recommendations, and GMO-related labels. Students, on the other hand, showed a stronger understanding of the “use-by” label and performed better on several other labelling elements.
