Title:Land use dynamics in the Bistriško Pohorje area between 1824 and 2024
Abstract:Throughout human history, land use has evolved in parallel with human needs and aspirations. The most significant changes have been recorded on agricultural land. For this purpose, we monitored changes in land use in the cadastral municipalities of the Bistrica part of Pohorje in three different periods: in the years 1824/1825 with the help of the Franciscan Cadastre, in 1900 using the Lexicon of Municipalities of Styria and in 2024 based on processed data obtained by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food and the Geodetic Administration of the Republic of Slovenia. We found that during the observed time period, the area of cultivated land, especially vineyards and fields, decreased, resulting in an increase in the proportion of forest areas. These data confirm the well-known fact that the area of agricultural land is decreasing. The way land use changed differed between cadastral municipalities. To analyse these changes more precisely, we identified altitude as the main factor influencing them. The results reveal that most agricultural land at lower altitudes is lost to urbanization, while at higher altitudes, agricultural land tends to become overgrown. In both cases, the area of intensively cultivated land, such as vineyards and fields, decreases.
