V magistrskem delu smo sintetizirali magnetne nanodelce (MNPs), funkcionalizirane z λ-karagenanom (λ-CARR), naravnim polisaharidom, z namenom učinkovite adsorpcije strateških kovin iz vodnih raztopin, kjer adsorpcijska mesta predstavljajo sulfatne skupine. Kristalno strukturo nanoadsorbenta smo okarakterizirali z rentgensko praškovno difrakcijo (XRD), njegovo morfologijo in velikost pa določili s transmisijsko elektronsko mikroskopijo (TEM). Površinsko kemijo magnetnih nanodelcev, prevlečenih z λ-CARR, smo kvalitativno analizirali s Fourierjevo transformacijsko infrardečo spektroskopijo (ATR-FTIR), ter podrobneje z rentgensko fotoelektronsko spektroskopijo (XPS). Z dinamičnim sipanjem svetlobe (DLS) in meritvami ζ-potenciala smo ovrednotili velikost delcev in njihov površinski naboj. Preučili smo vpliv različnih parametrov na adsorpcijsko učinkovitost, in sicer: maso adsorbenta, pH-vrednost raztopine, začetno koncentracijo Cu²⁺, kontaktni čas, temperaturo ter možnosti regeneracije in ponovne uporabe adsorbenta.

Title:Synthesis and application of polysaccharide-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles for the adsorption of strategic metals
Abstract:Strategic metals, including copper, are essential raw materials in modern industry, particularly in the development of electronic and electrical devices. Due to limited natural resources and increasing demand, their recovery from secondary sources, such as electronic and electrical waste (e-waste), has become increasingly important. One of the promising approaches in this field is magnetic nanohydrometallurgy (MNHM), which combines hydrometallurgical processes with nanotechnology and relies on the adsorption of metal ions using functionalized magnetic nanoparticles. In this thesis, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) functionalized with λ-carrageenan (λ-CARR), a natural polysaccharide, were synthesized with the aim of efficiently adsorbing strategic metals from aqueous solutions, where sulfate groups served as the active adsorption sites. The crystalline structure of the nanoadsorbent was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), while its morphology and size were determined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The surface chemistry of λ-CARR-coated MNPs was analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and further examined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and ζ-potential measurements were used to assess particle size and surface charge. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) quantified the amount of polysaccharide coating, and magnetic properties were investigated with a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The developed magnetic polysaccharide nanoadsorbent (MNPs@CARR) demonstrated strong potential for copper ion removal. The effects of various parameters on adsorption efficiency were studied, including adsorbent dosage, solution pH, initial Cu²⁺ concentration, contact time, temperature, as well as adsorbent regeneration and reuse. Copper ion concentrations were determined using a colorimetric method with a photometer. The optimal conditions for Cu²⁺ removal were established as: γ(Cu²⁺) = 1.3 mg L⁻¹, V = 20 mL, pH = 6, T = 298 K, 20 mg adsorbent, and a contact time of 2 h, achieving a removal efficiency of 84.6 %. Under these conditions, MNPs@CARR retained approximately 60% of its initial adsorption capacity after four regeneration cycles. These results indicate that the synthesized nanomaterial is suitable for the sustainable treatment and recovery of strategic and critical metals, such as boron (B), strontium (Sr), and aluminum (Al), from secondary sources like printed circuit boards of mobile phones.
