Title:Empirical analysis of economic growth determinants in selected african countries
Abstract:The central aim of this thesis is an econometric analysis of the factors that influence economic growth in the selected countries over the observed period. These countries are Egypt, South Africa, Morocco, Nigeria, and Tunisia. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, we establish the theoretical foundations for the subsequent analysis, based on economic theory and previous empirical research in the field of economic growth. This section also presents several macroeconomic indicators that, according to prior findings, are the main determinants of economic growth. The theoretical framework serves as the basis for the second part of the thesis. We estimate the economic growth function for each of the selected countries. We then test the specification and stability of the regression coefficients and verify the validity of the assumptions of the ordinary least squares (OLS) method. Our findings indicate that in Egypt, government final consumption expenditure has the strongest impact on economic growth. In South Africa, the most influential factor is the average of the Worldwide Governance Indicators. In Morocco, and Nigeria, national income is the key determinant, while In Tunisia, life expectancy at birth plays the most important role. We conclude that all models confirm the validity of the OLS assumptions.
