Poleg tega so ugotovitve pokazale, da so mlajše generacije bolj nagnjene k uporabi BNPL v primerjavi s starejšimi skupinami, kar potrjuje generacijski značaj njene uporabe. Zmanjševanje teh tveganj zahteva kombinacijo boljše finančne pismenosti, preglednih praks ponudnikov in jasnejšega regulativnega okvira.

Title:The impact of the "buy now, pay later" model on young adults´financial habits
Abstract:The “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) payment method has in recent years become one of the fastest-growing forms of digital financing, significantly influencing the financial habits of young adults. It represents a type of installment payment that reduces the immediate financial burden of purchases and enables quicker access to consumption, while at the same time raising concerns regarding responsible use, long-term consequences, and regulatory oversight. The theoretical part of the thesis analyzes the development of payment methods, the specific characteristics of the BNPL model, and its psychological and financial effects on younger generations, with particular emphasis on the risks of impulsive spending and underestimation of costs. The empirical analysis, based on a survey conducted among young people in Slovenia, shows that BNPL services are most frequently used by younger consumers due to their easy accessibility. The results confirmed the link between lower financial literacy and an increased risk of negative long-term consequences, such as higher levels of indebtedness. Moreover, the findings revealed that younger generations are more inclined to use BNPL compared to older groups, which confirms the generational nature of its adoption. The collected data demonstrate that BNPL is a double-edged sword: on the one hand, it enhances financial flexibility and accessibility for young users, while on the other, it increases the risk of irresponsible spending. Reducing these risks requires a combination of improved financial literacy, transparent practices by providers, and a clearer regulatory framework.
