Title:Comparison of pasture parameters of grazing suckler cows in different lactation phases with the rumiwatch system
Abstract:The aim of the study was to determine how parity and time of day affect the behavioural parameters of suckler cows with calves at pasture. Cows of different parities were included, and their behaviour was monitored using the RumiWatch system. The analysed parameters were: Other activity time, rumination time, drinking time, number of chews, number of bites, number of boluses, chews per minute and chews per bolus. The results showed that other activity time did not differ significantly between parities (p = 0.615) or time periods (p = 0.781). Rumination time was significantly affected by parity (p = 0.040) and time of day (p < 0.001). For drinking time, no differences were found between parities (p = 0.554), while time of day had a significant effect (p = 0.002). The number of chews differed significantly between parities (p = 0.001) and time periods (p < 0.001). Similarly, the number of bites was significantly affected by parity (p < 0.001) and time of day (p < 0.001). The number of boluses also showed significant differences for both factors (p = 0.012; p < 0.001). For chews per minute, significant differences were found between parities (p < 0.001) and time periods (p = 0.018). Chews per bolus did not differ significantly between parities (p = 0.480), but time of day had a significant effect (p < 0.001). Overall, the results indicate that both parity and time of day significantly influence several behavioural parameters of cows at pasture. These findings contribute to a better understanding of grazing behaviour and may help optimise pasture management and improve animal welfare.
