Title:Usage of women's surnames
Abstract:The master's thesis presents a study on the usage of women's surnames, as displayed in the corpus Trendi, with an added emphasis on the usage of forms with the null suffix in relation to possessive forms with the suffixes -ova/-eva in various syntactic uses: independent use of the surname (i.e. without the first name), the surname with the first name, the surname next to the initial of the first name, and the surname next to a title, function or occupation. The research covers four groups of women's surnames: single domestic, double-barrelled domestic, single foreign and double-barrelled foreign surnames. The selection comprises the surnames of specific individuals who have been frequently featured in the media in recent years and are active in various fields, such as politics, culture and sports. The analysis of the corpus Trendi found that women's surnames are more common in forms using the null suffix than the possessive form. Additionally, the analysis also found that the possessive form is 1.4 times more common in independent surname uses, i.e. without the first name. However, the use of surnames with the null suffix is also very prevalent and highly represented in the analysed material, as evidenced by the remaining three syntactic uses, in which the null suffix was shown to be prevalent. Thus, previous research (e.g. Šorli 2019a) has also confirmed that the independent use of surnames with the null suffix has recently become more established.
