Abstract:Šport in gibalne aktivnosti pozitivno vplivajo na počutje in zdravje. Učitelji jahanja spodbujajo učence k samostojnosti in prevzemanju odgovornosti.

Title:The role of recreational horse riding in managing children's learning difficulties
Abstract:Sports and physical activities have a positive impact on well-being and health. Through empirical research the role of recreational riding in school success and managing children's learning difficulties was examined. Qualitative and quantitative data from 49 primary pupils, 39 parents and 28 riding teachers from various locations, mostly in north-eastern Slovenia was collected. The results of our research showed that the impact of horseback riding on school success is not negative, as it relaxes, educates, and motivates pupils in completing their schoolwork. Most pupils ride once, twice or three times a week for three years or more and have achieved excellent or very good final school results and do not have major learning difficulties, approximately ¼ of those pupils are pupils with special needs. They feel good when riding and are intrinsically motivated to learn. While riding they acquire physical skills, train their attention and concentration. They learn how to care for a horse and acquire work habits. Riding teachers encourage pupils to be independent and take responsibility. Pupils themselves have noticed that while learning to ride, they have become more persistent and confident, they are able to relax when testing and assessing knowledge. They are also more relaxed in the company of their peers, and they have more confidence in themselves and their abilities. Parents and riding teachers also notice similar effects of riding on children, only from a different perspective. Parents like to allow their children to ride if they fulfil their obligations. They are aware that physical activity plays an important role in developing a positive self-image as well as solving problems. Riding teachers also learn about children's problems and strong areas while working with them, and they are aware how important the support of the teachers, peers – as they often work in groups – and the horse, a relationship important to children, is. Riding teachers encourage students' efforts. Progress in learning to ride brings pupils a sense of competence, which eases their school work.
