Abstract:Migracije postajajo vse pomembnejše in vplivajo na številna področja, predvsem na trg dela. V večini razvitih gospodarstev prihaja do staranja prebivalstva in do težav pomanjkanja delovne sile.

Title:Migration and the labour market: a comparison of selected european countries
Abstract:Migration is becoming increasingly significant and has a profound impact on various areas, particularly the labour market. Most developed economies are facing an ageing population and labour shortages. While other mitigating factors exist to maintain the labour force and productivity in developed countries, such as retaining older workers in employment for longer periods, migration also plays a crucial role. However, migration is more complex than it may appear at first glance, since the type of migration, the educational level, the country of origin, and the age of migrants strongly determine the extent and nature of the benefits for the host country’s workforce. In order to maximise the economic benefits of migration flows, countries must pursue flexible migration and integration policies, ensure easier social integration for migrants, and provide access to the labour market. This thesis highlights key findings on migration in selected European countries, namely: during the analyzed period, most observed EU member states recorded a higher inflow of migrants from third countries than from within the EU; demographic factors will further increase the importance of migration in the future; and while migrant labour in the observed EU countries has so far been more frequently employed in lower-skilled occupations, this trend has begun to shift in recent years.
