Abstract:Dobro počutje oziroma dobrobit živali je predpogoj za visoko kakovostno in nemoteno rejo in postaja eden izmed stebrov produktivne, učinkovite ter trajnostne reje. Za spremljanje stanja dobrega počutja v reji so bili razviti specifični protokoli. Ocenjevanje dobrobiti se primarno izvaja v rejah ene vrste živali, medtem ko informacij ocenjevanja z uporabo istih protokolov v mešani reji pravzaprav ni. Živali so bile socialno integrirane in so izražale predvsem pozitivno obnašanje.

Title:Evaluation of goat and sheep welfare in mixed herd
Abstract:Animal welfare is a prerequisite for a high quality smooth livestock production and is becoming one of the pillars of productive, efficient, and sustainable farming. To monitor welfare in herds, specific assessment protocols have been developed. Welfare assessment is primarily conducted in single species herds, while assessment using the same protocols in mixed species herds is practically non existent. In this study, we used the AWIN protocols to evaluate the level of welfare in a mixed herds of small ruminants, i.e., during the simultaneous grazing of sheep and goats. Assessments were carried out in spring and summer in a mixed herd consisting of 25 sheep and 19 goats at the PRE Drobnica pasture at the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The welfare assessment results for these sheep and goats showed that the animals were adequately fed, had access to water, were in good physical condition and held in suitable housing, with no signs of pain or serious illness observed. The animals were socially integrated and exhibited predominantly positive behaviors. Minor deviations, such as overgrown hooves in goats or lameness in individual sheep, highlighted the need for regular health monitoring. The rearing conditions in the mixed flock allowed for the expression of normal behavior, social interactions, and overall animal welfare, while the observed minor deviations empathized the importance of ongoing health surveillance and maintenance of high quality husbandry. Species specific protocols can also be applied in mixed farming systems, however for such systems it would be necessary to develop a unified protocol suitable for assessing both species simultaneously (by adapting and combining certain indicators and including the evaluation of interspecies interactions).
