Abstract:V magistrskem delu analiziramo reprezentacijo otrok v modnih oglasih na družbenem omrežju Instagram z vidika spolnih stereotipov in seksualizacije. Na konotativni ravni drže telesa, seksualizirana oblačila, barve (npr. rdeča), stopnja barvne nasičenosti (nasičene barve), naličen obraz, kretnje rok (npr. konice prstov v pramenih las) in (zapeljiv) pogled, usmerjen neposredno v gledalstvo, vzpostavljajo konotacije feminine lepote, zapeljivosti in seksualnosti.

Title:Gender stereotypes and the sexualization of children in fashion advertisements
Abstract:In this master's thesis, we analyse the representation of children in fashion advertisements on the social network Instagram from the perspective of gender stereotypes and sexualization. The analysis includes nine advertising photographs from three companies that sell children's clothing (Mia Belle Girls, Daisy Kids, and Miral Kids Store). A socio-semiotic approach to multi-code analysis is used (Machin 2007; Kress 2009; Machin, Mayr 2012; Per Ledin, Machin 2018; Kress, van Leeuwen 2021), which enables a systematic analysis of visual elements. A four-level semiotic model was used for the analysis: denotation, connotation, interaction of elements, interpretation of cultural context. The analysis showed that the girls in all photographs are depicted generically, as child models. At the denotative level, there are repeated images of girls photographed in medium shot, wearing tight-fitting clothes that emphasise their body shape. Their faces are made up and lit, their hair is styled, and they typically stand with one leg or knee slightly bent forward. On a connotative level, the body postures, sexualized clothing, colours (e.g., red), the degree of colour saturation (saturated colours), made-up faces, hand gestures (e.g., fingertips in strands of hair), and (seductive) gazes directed directly at the audience establish connotations of feminine beauty, seductiveness, and sexuality. The interaction of body posture, gestures, gaze, colours, clothing, and fashion accessories creates an image of an adultified girl who imitates the images of adult women. Interpretation of the cultural context shows that girls are represented in a sexualized manner. The sexualized image of girls reinforces the stereotype of attractive but accessible femininity, which exists primarily in relation to the so-called male gaze, while at the same time inscribing norms of feminine appearance into children's bodies, thereby blurring the line between childhood and adulthood. Fashion companies use girls to promote fashion products, thereby exposing their bodies to sexual objectification at an early age, which can lead to the normalization of sexualized images of children. The representation of sexually marked children's bodies in (online) fashion advertisements exposes children to sexualized images and influences the perception of gender in performative contexts.
