Abstract:Med Slovenci in Hrvati prevladuje prepričanje, da Slovenci bolje razumejo hrvaščino kot Hrvati slovenščino.

Title:Mutual intelligibility of Slovene and Croatian
Abstract:Among Slovenians and Croats, there is a prevailing belief that Slovenians understand Croatian better than Croats understand Slovenian. Therefore, in this master's thesis, we will investigate the extent to which Slovenians and Croats understand each other. In the theoretical part, we will first present the concept of mutual intelligibility, its historical outline, previous research on this topic, a brief description of the process of learning and perceiving a foreign language, the role of a common historical and cultural background, and look at the division of South Slavic languages, with an emphasis on the Slovenian and Croatian languages. In the empirical part, we present the results of 32 Slovenian respondents and 33 Croatian respondents who participated in our research. We analysed the results of listening and reading comprehension from levels A1 to C2, as set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and knowledge of the most common nouns and verbs. The results showed that mutual intelligibility is at a high level for both Slovenians and Croatians. Although the differences at certain levels are minimal, both samples achieved similar results. The results also show that a certain number of variables that positively influence the understanding of another language also positively influence the knowledge of that language. Based on the analysis of the results, we concluded that Slovenians and Croatians understand each other up to the B1 level according to CEFR.
