Abstract:Namen diplomskega dela je bil raziskati, analizirati in implementirati postopke za obnovo strežnika Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) po kritični okvari. WSUS je pomembna kritična infrastruktura, saj omogoča centralizirano upravljanje in distribucijo posodobitev v okoljih Windows. Njegova zrušitev pomeni varnostne grožnje in nestabilnost sistema, ker prekine redno nameščanje varnostnih posodobitev. V okviru raziskave so bili najprej analizirani glavni vzroki za zrušitev sistema, kot so preobremenitev podatkovne baze Software Update Services DataBase (SUSDB), pomanjkanje rednega vzdrževanja in neustrezna konfiguracija.

Title:Recovery and optimization of windows server update services after server failure
Abstract:The purpose of this thesis was to research, analyse, and implement procedures for the recovery of the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server after a critical failure. WSUS is an important part of critical infrastructure, as it enables centralized management and distribution of updates in Windows environments. Its crash poses security threats and system instability because it interrupts the regular installation of security updates. Within the scope of the research, the main causes of the system failure were first analysed, such as the overload of the Software Update Services Database (SUSDB), lack of regular maintenance, and improper configuration. Using diagnostic tools such as Windows Event Viewer, PowerShell scripts, and WSUS log files, we thoroughly analysed the causes of the crash. Based on these findings, a protocol was developed for its recovery and optimization for the system’s long-term operation. The research results demonstrate that, with a systematic approach, it is possible to successfully restore the operation of WSUS and significantly improve its stability and performance. The experience from this study can serve as a reference framework for other organizations facing similar challenges in managing critical IT infrastructure.
