Abstract:Magistrsko delo celovito obravnava oblikovanje in razvoj fevdalnega sistema v Angliji v obdobju od pozne anglosaške države (konec 10. stoletja) do zaključka vladavine normanske dinastije leta 1154.

Title:The Development of English Feudalism
Abstract:This master's thesis provides a comprehensive examination of the formation and development of the feudal system in England from the late Anglo-Saxon period (late 10th century) to the end of the Norman dynasty in 1154. The introductory chapters analyse the political, economic, legal, and military conditions in England before 1066, showing that certain elements reminiscent of feudal relations already existed in Anglo-Saxon society: land grants with specific obligations, military service within the fyrd system, and bonds of loyalty and protection between the nobility and the peasantry. The central part of the research focuses on the transformative changes brought about by the Norman Conquest under William the Conqueror—from the formal introduction of the feudal hierarchy and the centralisation of authority to the reorganisation of land ownership. A dedicated chapter examines the Domesday Book of 1086, which serves as a key historical source for understanding the redistribution of landholdings, the reduction of the free peasantry, and the establishment of a rigid hierarchical landholding structure under Norman rule. The thesis also provides a detailed discussion of the role of the Church as a major landowner, legal changes (such as trial by combat and the operation of feudal courts), and the military and fiscal aspects of the feudal order. The analysis concludes with a comparison of English feudalism with the French and other continental models, highlighting the particularly strong monarchy and the closer alignment of the nobility with the crown as distinctive English features. To some extent, the thesis also supports the view that English feudalism was not an entirely new system but rather an enhancement of pre-existing social and landholding structures, which the Norman Conquest institutionalised, consolidated, and significantly accelerated.
