Abstract:Mediji so že od nekdaj pomemben del družbe. Posledično vplivajo na naslovnike njihovih sporočil. Preko svojih vsebin in tez namreč posredno in neposredno vplivajo na mnenje posameznikov in družbe kot celote. In tukaj pridemo do največje skušnjave medijev in oblasti.

Title:Media and the perception of crime
Abstract:The media have always been an important part of society and consequently influence the recipients of their messages. Through their content and theses, they directly and indirectly shape the opinions of individuals and of society as a whole. This influence is particularly evident in the field of crime. A person who has no personal experience with crime or does not read expert discussions cannot form a clear picture of it on their own. In this master’s thesis, we find that the media create a distorted image of crime. They highlight the types of crime that are most sensational, though not necessarily the most common. News reports about crime are, in fact, a marketable commodity that the media often use to attract listeners, readers, or viewers. The way crime is reported often also influences the public’s fear of crime. With the emergence of new, so-called social media, the situation has not changed significantly. It is important to emphasize that official crime statistics do not match media reports. In reality, there is less crime than the media portray. Furthermore, other criminal and deviant behaviors represent a greater social problem than media coverage would suggest. All of this can lead people, through media reporting, to form their views on the rule of law and their attitudes toward penal policy. And here lies the greatest temptation for both the media and those in power: the possibility that the authorities may use the media to influence public opinion or to gain public consent for their measures and actions.
