Title:The role of public and private funding in reduction of carbon footprint of Slovenian tourism
Abstract:Businesses and financial institutions play a crucial role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, and tourism as an important part of the economy can significantly influence the course of the green transition and sustainable economic growth. In the EU, an additional €180 billion per year is needed to meet the energy and climate targets by 2030, with an even larger amount required to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. A significant portion of these funds will need to come from private capital, requiring a better understanding of climate risks by companies and financial institutions. By the end of the century, weather related natural disasters could affect up to two thirds of the European population. In response, the EU has introduced an Action Plan on Financing Sustainable Growth, which aims to redirect capital towards sustainable investments and climate risk management. Policies and subsidies are key to promoting sustainable tourism development. In Slovenia alone, more than seven such tenders were published in 2022, covering the co-financing of renovations and improvements to the energy efficiency of buildings, the construction of green tourism infrastructure such as parks and green spaces and the co-financing of costs for obtaining internationally recognized environmental or sustainability certificates.
