Abstract:Uvod: Zaradi zahtevnosti dela so zdravstveni delavci pogosto izpostavljeni stresu, kar lahko vodi v povečano uživanje alkohola.

Title:Alcohol abuse among healthcare workers due to stress and supervision support
Abstract:Introduction: Healthcare workers are frequently exposed to stress due to the demanding nature of their profession, which may lead to increased alcohol consumption. The aim of this thesis was to determine, through a literature review, the extent to which occupational stress influences alcohol abuse among healthcare workers and to examine the role of supervision as a form of support in managing stress. Methods: A descriptive research method was used, including analysis and synthesis of scientific articles retrieved from CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and ScienceDirect. The time frame covered the period from 2014 to 2024. The collected data were analysed, the strength of evidence was assessed using the hierarchy of evidence, and the results were presented in an evaluation table. Results: Seven articles were included in the final analysis. The findings indicate that workplace stress is an important factor contributing to risky alcohol consumption. The frequency of drinking is influenced by gender, work environment, job type and individual characteristics. The COVID-19 pandemic further increased workload and alcohol use among some groups of healthcare workers. Many healthcare workers do not seek help due to stigma and fear of possible consequences. Discussion and conclusion: Supervision has proven to be an effective approach that strengthens resilience to stress, encourages reflection on work and provides a safe and supportive environment. The introduction of supervision and additional supportive measures contributes to reducing stress and, consequently, to a lower incidence of alcohol abuse among healthcare workers.
