Zaradi tega ni mogoče v kratkem času preseči procesov medkulturne marginalizacije, čeprav so v vzgoji in izobraževanju na deklarativni ravni zapisana načela medkulturne vzgoje in izobraževanja. Specifično za učni predmet geografija so koncepti medkulturne vzgoje in izobraževanja del šolskega kurikula in so zapisani v ciljih učnih načrtov geografije.

Title:Overcoming intercultural marginalisation in geography lessons through teacher intercultural competence
Abstract:Intercultural marginalization is a process driven by social factors and reinforced by stigmatizing, historically rooted attitudes of the majority population toward minority groups within a specific spatial and temporal context. Consequently, the process of overcoming intercultural marginalization cannot be accomplished quickly, even though the principles of intercultural education are formally embedded in educational policies. In the case of geography as a school subject, the concepts of intercultural education are integrated into the curriculum and reflected in the objectives of geography syllabi. Drawing on an analysis of geography curricula and textbooks, complemented by interviews with geography teachers, the study reveals the rare presence of contemporary forms of intercultural discrimination, primarily manifested through Eurocentric and ethnocentric perspectives on intercultural topics and through generalizations that lead to stereotyping. The analyzed recently revised textbooks predominantly feature multiperspective representations of intercultural content, including viewpoints of minority and marginalized ethnic groups or cultures within specific geographical contexts. While curricula and textbooks provide opportunities for fostering intercultural competence, the critical factor in overcoming intercultural marginalization in geography education is an interculturally sensitive and competent teacher, capable of empowering students according to their abilities and nurturing intercultural sensitivity, empathy, and critical thinking. This process necessitates support from school leadership, fellow educators, and students’ families.
