Abstract:
Anketni izsledki potrjujejo hibridno naravo kriznega komuniciranja in ambivalenten odnos do družbenih omrežij.

Title:
The role of social media in crisis events: a comparative analysis of the chibok girls kidnapping and the manila bus hijacking
Abstract:
This thesis examines how social media influence the course and perception of crisis events compared to traditional media. In the field of crisis communication, we analyse two crisis cases the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Chibok (2014) and the hostage crisis in Manila (2010) as well as an online survey conducted among users from Slovenia and Serbia (n = 121). We use qualitative analysis of corpora of media, institutional and analytical sources, and quantitative processing of the survey data. The results show a more “positive” potential of digital activism in the Chibok case and a “negative” impact of unregulated live reporting in the Manila case. The survey findings confirm the hybrid nature of crisis communication and an ambivalent attitude towards social media. On this basis, we develop a proposal for a hybrid crisis communication model for public institutions.
