Abstract:Magistrska naloga obravnava možnosti uvedbe malih modularnih reaktorjev v slovenski elektroenergetski sistem kot eno izmed ključnih rešitev za doseganje ciljev razogljičenja, energetske varnosti in zanesljive oskrbe z električno energijo. V zaključku sledi ekonomska analiza upravičenosti investicije, kjer so upoštevani različni obratovalni scenariji – od pasovne proizvodnje, sledenja bremenu do zagotavljanja sistemskih storitev. Namen naloge je podati celostno oceno tehnične, prostorske in ekonomske izvedljivosti postavitve male modularne enote v Sloveniji ter preveriti njeno potencialno vlogo v prihodnjem energetskem sistemu države.

Title:Feasibility of deploying an SMR power plant at an existing energy site
Abstract:This master’s thesis explores the potential deployment of Small Modular Reactors in Slovenia’s power system as a key solution for achieving decarbonization goals, energy security, and reliable electricity supply. The introductory part presents the small modular reactor technology, its core characteristics, advantages, and an overview of current and developing light water reactor designs. The following sections analyze the role of small modular reactors within the framework of Slovenian strategic and climate policy documents and outline the main criteria for selecting suitable sites. The central part of the thesis focuses on the technical and spatial analysis of the Brestanica site, evaluating infrastructure, environmental, and social aspects. In the final part, an economic feasibility assessment is provided, taking into account various operational scenarios—from baseload electricity generation, load following to the provision of ancillary services. The aim of the thesis is to deliver a comprehensive evaluation of the technical, spatial, and economic viability of deploying the small modular reactor unit in Slovenia and to examine its potential role in the future national energy system.
Keywords:SMR, nuclear energy, decarbonization, power systems, feasibilty.
