Title:Urbanism as a method of crime prevention
Abstract:The thesis examines the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) method, which is based on the assumption that crime occurrence is closely linked to the physical characteristics of space and to the way the environment is designed, organized, and maintained. The theoretical part draws on the foundations of environmental criminology and presents the development of first- and second-generation CPTED, including the concepts of defensible space, routine activity theory, and broken windows theory. Special attention is given to key CPTED principles such as natural surveillance, access control, territoriality, and maintenance. The empirical part analyzes the implementation of these principles in Tivoli Park in Ljubljana. Through field observation, photographic documentation, and spatial analysis, the current state of the park is assessed in relation to safety, visibility, and spatial organization. The findings show that the park incorporates several effective CPTED elements, while also revealing shortcomings related to limited visibility, insufficient lighting, and areas that reduce the sense of oversight and increase concealment opportunities. Based on the analysis, recommendations are proposed to enhance safety, improve natural surveillance, and strengthen the overall spatial quality of the park.
