Abstract:Socialna omrežja so postala sestavni del vsakdanjika mladih in pomembno vplivajo na njihovo vedenje, samopodobo in prehranjevalne navade.

Title:The association between social media use, the development of eating disorders, and self-image in adolescents
Abstract:Social media has become an integral part of adolescents' daily lives, significantly shaping their behavior, body image and eating habits. Research indicates that intensive use of social media increases the risk of body dissatisfaction and the development of eating disorders. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among secondary school students in Slovenia (n = 202), aged 14 to 19 years. Data were collected using a questionnaire that included validated screening scales. Analyses were performed using IBM SPSS 29.0 and Microsoft Office Excel, applying descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Statistical tests showed that most respondents spend 3 to 4 hours daily (49.0%) or more (18.5%) on social media. A majority reported starting a diet or exercise due to online content. A significant association was observed between appearance comparison and body dissatisfaction (p < 0.05), more frequent meal skipping, and a higher likelihood of following popular diets. The findings confirm that social media use has a considerable impact on shaping body image and eating habits among adolescents. The results are consistent with international studies and highlight the need for preventive measures.
