Abstract:Pripovedovanje zgodb človeštvo spremlja že od prazgodovine – nikdar ni bilo in ni ljudstva brez zgodb.

Title:Dark storytelling as a tool in marketing tourist destinations
Abstract:Storytelling has accompanied humanity since prehistoric times—there has never been a people without stories. Storytelling is a powerful tool in marketing tourist destinations as it evokes emotions in the listener and allows them to immerse themselves in the story, rather than just listening to dry facts. This master's thesis focuses on the telling of dark stories, i.e., those related to dark heritage and dark tourism destinations – all tourism based on visiting places associated with death, suffering, and tragedy. We place special emphasis on witch tourism, a form of tour-ism that has emerged from the witch heritage of European witch hunts, or rather from global historical and contemporary witchcraft practices. The aim of this work is to define dark tourism in general, define witchcraft tourism, present places whose tourist offer is largely based on witchcraft tourism, as well as determine the importance of storytelling, the form of stories and their connection to the emotional response of visitors, and their impact on the purpose of the visit, if the story is the primary factor in marketing communication. Based on our findings, we created two questionnaires with a short video and four scales on which respondents (N=192) rated the extent to which they were attracted to the story of a fictional destination, what emotions they experienced, and how this influenced the purpose of their visit. The results of our study showed that storytelling is a powerful tool for evoking emotional response in visitors, that the experience of emotion varies based on visitor’s country of residence and that positive emotions are more strongly associated with the intention to visit than negative emotions.
