Abstract:Uvod: Mladostniki zaradi intenzivnih razvojnih sprememb predstavljajo rizično skupino za razvoj internetne zasvojenosti (IA) in motnje igranja iger (IGD).

Title:Negative effects of excessive internet use on cognitive functions in adolescents and young adults
Abstract:Introduction: Adolescents, due to intense developmental changes, represent a high-risk group for developing internet addiction (IA) and gaming disorder (IGD). Prevalence varies across regions, and vulnerability is influenced by emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, ADHD, and unfavorable social conditions. Methods: For studies focusing on psychological factors, behavioral patterns, and neurobiological changes associated with excessive internet use among young people, we conducted a review of the scientific literature in the PubMed, CINAHL, and SAGE Journals databases using a predefined search strategy. Results: The most common motives for internet use are entertainment and social interaction. Excessive use is linked to poor coping strategies, cognitive rigidity, social withdrawal, depressive symptoms, sleep problems, and academic decline. Males and impulsive individuals are more at risk for IGD. Neurobiological studies reveal alterations in prefrontal, insular, temporal, and occipital regions, as well as dysfunctional connectivity among the DMN, ECN, DAN, and SN networks, affecting attention, inhibition, and emotion regulation. Discussion andConclusion: IA and IGD represent multidimensional issues involving psychological, social, and neurobiological factors. Changes in brain networks indicate weakened cognitive control, though some findings suggest possible compensatory mechanisms. Prevention and intervention efforts should focus on strengthening self-regulation, providing environmental support, and identifying high-risk groups.
