Title:The role of puppets in encouraging spoken production and overcoming shyness in children
Abstract:The bachelor's thesis examines the role of puppets in encouraging spoken production and overcoming shyness in preschool children. The thesis is divided into two parts: a theoretical and an empirical part. The theoretical parts addresses children's speech development, the characteristics of shy individuals, and the pedagogical potential of using puppets in nursery schools, presenting puppets as motivational tools and communication aids. The aim of the empirical part is to determine how frequently and in which situations nursery teachers use puppets when working with children, which types of puppets they preferred, and how they assess the influence of puppets on the spoken production of shy children. The empirical part is based on a causal non-experimental and descriptive research method. Data are collected through an online questionnaire consisting of close-ended questions. The participants in the study are 80 nursery teachers from the Velenje Nursery School. The results are analysed quantitatively and presented using absolute and percentage values. The findings show that nursery teachers use puppets occasionally, most often during storytelling and dramatization activities, with hand puppets being the most frequently chosen type. Puppets are found to be effective tools for encouraging spoken production, enriching vocabulary, and reducing reticence in shy children.
