Title:Stress and anxiety in younger age groups (under 14) in volleyball: causes and coping strategies
Abstract:The thesis examines the prevalence of stress and anxiety among young volleyball players and the strategies they use to cope with psychological pressures in sports. The aim of the research was to determine how often young athletes experience stress, which factors most commonly trigger it, and which relaxation techniques they use to manage tension. The objectives of the study were to identify the main causes of stress and anxiety, assess their intensity and frequency, examine the athletes’ knowledge and use of relaxation techniques, and evaluate the role of coaches and parents as potential sources of pressure or support. The theoretical part presents the fundamental concepts of stress and anxiety, their types, symptoms, and sources within the sports environment. Particular attention is given to physiological and psychological responses, the consequences of prolonged stress, and strategies for effective coping. In addition, relaxation techniques, the process of psychological preparation, and the basic characteristics of volleyball as a sports discipline are discussed. The empirical part is based on a quantitative research approach using an anonymous questionnaire, completed by 108 young volleyball players aged 10 to 14. The results show that young athletes most frequently experience stress during competitions, mainly due to fear of making mistakes, the importance of the match, and teammates' reactions, while parental pressure appears less prominent. The most commonly used relaxation strategies are breathing techniques, positive thinking, and communicating with teammates or the coach. Approximately half of the participants expressed a desire to further develop relaxation skills, highlighting the importance of systematic psychological support in youth sports.
