Title:The importance of perceived social support and psychological resilience during incarceration
Abstract:Serving a prison sentence represents an exceptionally stressful life experience for individuals and may significantly affect mental health, social functioning, and adaptation to the prison environment. Despite these risks, some incarcerated individuals develop effective coping strategies, in which social support and psychological resilience play a key role. The aim of this master’s thesis is to explore how incarcerated individuals experience social support and psychological resilience, and how these experience influence their adjustment to the prison environment. The study included male prisoners from a juvenile detention facility and the Celje Prison. The research adopted a qualitative approach based on the principles of grounded theory, with data collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews. The analysis of seven interviews resulted in 47 codes, which were grouped into nine categories and used to develop a conceptual model. The model illustrates a symbolic bridge: the foundation represents social support as the basis for psychological growth; the pillars symbolize psychological resilience, which bears the weight of everyday challenges; and the platform represents the process of adaptation and personal growth. Together, these elements enable the formation of the bridge and are grounded in the individual’s psychological stability. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the lived experiences of incarcerated individuals and highlight the importance of comprehensive support and the strengthening of resilience within prison settings.
