Title:Exclusive inclusivity - the commodification of subcultures and trends in marketing
Abstract:Rapid evolution of fashion trends is a fascinating phenomenon, yet it imposes significantly increasing costs on both consumers and the environment. In an era defined by consumerism, it is necessary to enhance marketability of sustainability within the fashion industry. This thesis examines the historical trajectory of fashion trends and explores how foundational principles could be applied to contemporary phenomena such as internet aesthetics and microtrends. A combination of online survey and content analysis was used to identify key factors influencing the effectiveness of marketing campaigns. Findings of the study suggest that contemporary marketing strategies are often perceived as overly aggressive, with influencer-oriented marketing in particular showing signs of diminishing impact. Conclusion of the thesis is that promotion of more sustainable fashion practices requires several strategic shifts: reduction of microtrends, realistic promotion of internet aesthetics outside the confines of social media, reconciliation of individual expression with a sense of- and connection to- community (without dropping into conformism), as well as reimagining of influencer roles towards education about personal style rather than product promotion. Together, these approaches may pave the way toward a more sustainable, yet still fashion-forward future.
